It is located near Viazivok village, Mykhnivtsi Village Council, Lubny district, Poltava region, 3.0 km to the south from the village, in Danyliv Ostrovok natural landmark.
The remains of the ancient settlement were discovered in 1984. The site was excavated during 1985-1988 by the candidate of historical sciences (PhD) V. I. Neprina and in 1994 and 1995 — by I. M. Havrylenko with the participation of the doctor of historical sciences L. L. Zalizniak and B. Fitzhugh (University of Michigan).
The site is located between Viazivok village and Olexandrivka village, Lubny district, Poltava region, on the right bank of the Sliporid River (the right tributary of the Sula River), 4 km higher from its current mouth, it occupies the edge of relatively low cape, created by the Sliporid River at the uphill area of the Sula River pool. The total area is about 85×70 m (0.6 ha).
The total excavated area makes up approximately 250 sq. m. Thanks to perfectly preserved site cultural layer, the remains of 6 dwellings and 2 middens were discovered at site. The perspectives for further surveys have been studied not only for the settlement main area, but also for its tail area, which is found in turf deposits.
The distinctive and numerous collections of flint items, the samples of bone and stone tools, fauna remains and even the art objects of a primitive man (the latter belongs to the category of unique findings) has been discovered by the professionals at site.
The organic material preserved in the Mesolithic Period cultural layer provided a rare opportunity to determine the age of Viazivok IVа settlement by a radiocarbon method. The settlement was most likely functioning within the range of 9,650-9,450 years ago.
The settlement flint industry is one of the typical sites of the 2nd stage of Zymivnymkivskа culture of the Early Mesolithic Period at the Left Bank Ukraine.
Now Viazivok settlement is one of the most typical representations of the Mesolithic Period in the Eastern Europe. The accumulated archaeological materials allow for creating a detailed way of life and everyday activities of the ancient population of Ukraine in 8th millennium BC, making the graphical reconstruction of the settlement dwellings and determining the quantitative, age and gender content of their residents. Also, the settlement is a unique and important source for the studies of the ethnic and cultural processes, which occurred on the territory of our country during the Stone Age.
The professionals say that this site is one of the most potentially productive places from the perspective of eco-tourism and the creation of archaeological skansen – an open-air museum. The materials obtained in the process of surveying Viazivok settlement allows observing it in line with the most distinguished archaeological sites of Ukraine.
