Khyttsi village, fortified settlement and the township, the settlement of 6th – 7th c. BC.

opishya main

It is located at the edge of Khyttsi village, Kalaidyntsi Village Council, Lubny district, Poltava region, 2.0 km to the south-east from the village, on the right bank of the Udai River, in Kolomak and Shymberove natural landmarks.
It was discovered by I. Ya. Pleskach (1929), surveyed by F.B. Kopylov (1946), O. A. Moruzhenko (1996), M. P. Kuchera, O.V. Sukhobokov (1971), Yu. Yu. Morhunov (1988). The burial mound was surveyed by Ye. O. Horiunov (1973).
The fortified settlement occupies the right bank terrace, its surface is covered with woods, the cavity from the well is observable in the centre, residual steep slopes are scarped, more gently sloping side (north-eastern part) is additionally fortified by breastworks. The square area is 5 ha. The cultural layer capacity makes up 0.7 m and contains the substantial number of the fragments of Romen moulded dishes and Old Russian ceramics.
The crossing of the breastwork indicated that the first fortification was constructed in the Severiane times (Romen culture), but it burned down in the 2nd half of the 10th c. Near to the middle of 12th c. it was reconstructed, though, population activities greatly decreased.
Among the findings one can single out: a bone comb with circular ornament of the end of 10th – 1st half of 12th cc., big fishing hook and a rhombic arrowhead of the Old Russian times.
The township was discovered on the terrace slope. A lyre-shaped buckle of the Old Russian times was found on the territory of the township.
Next to the township in Shymberove natural landmark there is a burial mound, where 2 kurgans out of 13 were surveyed. Among the findings one should note a grindstone, iron rings, steels with flabs of Old Russian times.
The open township is located across the hollow to the south-west from the fortified settlement.

9th –14th, 17th –18th cc., Romen culture, the Kyivan Rus period, post-Mongol times, late Ukrainian Middle Ages.
