It is located on the western edge of Knyshivka village, Knyshivka Village Council, Hadiach district, Poltava region.
Knyshivka fortified settlement has been known since 2nd half of 18th c. (O. F. Shafonskyi), It was surveyed by V. H. Liaskoronskyi (1907), I. I. Liapushkin (1948). The research of the fortified settlement was continued in 1954 by V. A. Illinska. She conducted minor excavations there. In 1987 – 1993 an expedition group of the Poltava Pedagogical University headed by P. Ya. Havrysh, worked there. It surveyed 5,084 sq. m. of the main fortification cultural layer, especially the surveys of the probable entrance to the fortified settlement. Also, a section of its breastwork and moat were made.
Knyshivka fortified settlement is shaped on the plan as a rough oval, stretching from the north-east to the south-west. It is surrounded by a moat; its edges are cut through by the edge of the high bank of the Psel River. The length of the fortified settlement breastwork is 669 m. Its current height is from 2.9 to 4,7 m with the width of 15-25 m. The moat used to be 5 m wide and up to 2 m deep. The additional suburb breastwork was adjacent to the eastern and south-eastern part of the fortified settlement, it was 113 m long and approximately 1 m high. The fortified settlement area is 4 ha, the suburb area is 1 ha.
During many years of the fortified settlement and the suburb area surveys, the following archaeological complexes were discovered: dwellings – 10; farm buildings – 10; bone-carving workshop – 1; potter’s workshop – 1; religious worship premises – 1; middens – 122, etc. More than 146 thd of massive findings and almost 8 thd of individual findings were discovered in the fortified settlement: ceramic dish ware, tools, decorations, and personal items, arms and horse bridles. Most of them are typical artefacts of the Scythian times at the forest-steppe territory of the left bank of the Dnipro river. Among them a silver coin of Philip II of Macedon can be distinguished. The well represents a rare archaeological object.
Knyshivka fortified settlement is one of the biggest settlements of the Scythian times of the Psel basin and, for the time being, the only one on the territory of the Poltava region in this river system. The fortified settlement was a tribal centre of agricultural and cattle-breeding population of the Middle Psel basin at the Scythian times, 7th – the beginning of 3rd cc. BC.
